This weekend, we did a little more exploring than anticipated, making our way with our packs, tent, ice axes and no trail. The first night, we camped out at the base of Ahuriri River Valley in the heart of the Southern Alps. We got an early start the next morning and set out to Canyon Creek. Once we climbed up to about 1300 meters, we set up camp at the head of the valley. It was both refreshing and disturbing to know Cody and myself were the only two people in the entire valley. Other than the brisk morning air, waking up to a clear view of Thurneysen glacier didn't seem so bad. It was quite a significant climb over a short distance up to 1800 meters and the view made it well worth it. Walking across the ridge near Mount Barth, we searched for the best approach to descend on the opposite face. It's fair to say that going down was much worse than up. We easily found ourselves bluffed in after descending down the wrong stream valley several times. Luckily we managed to make our way back down into the Ahuriri valley. We were exhausted after this great adventure, but definitely learned a lot from it.
